Character Name: Luna Lovegood
Series: Harry Potter
Timeline: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, a few weeks after Slughorn's party.
Canon Resource Link: wiki
Character History: The daughter of a single father, Luna lost her mother when she was only nine. It was at this young age that she not only lost her mother, but also witnessed her death, as we learn from her ability to view thestrals--creatures that can only be seen by those who have witnessed death. Her mother had been performing magical experiments and the curious sort of nature that inspires that sort of activity lives on in her daughter.
Lune grew up surrounded by wizarding urban legends and oddball theories. Her father is the editor of the Quibbler, which is essentially regarded the Weekly World News of the wizarding world in Harry Potter.
When she begins Hogwarts, she is a year behind Harry Potter and his close friends and in the same year as Ginny Weasely and she is sorted into the Ravenclaw house, which is known for the value it places on wisdom and wit. In her first few years at Hogwarts, Luna regards no one as a friend and is referred to as Loony Lovegood by many of her classmates. She doesn't seem to mind this. By her fourth year, she's had quite a few classes with Ginny and while neither would call it a friendship, Ginny does express that she feels generally positive towards Luna.
It's at the beginning of her fourth year when she finally exchanges words with Harry Potter. While he'd been near death before, he'd witness a murder right before his eyes at the end of their last school year. Luna speaks to him about his newfound ability to see what he'd believed to be invisible horses pulling their carriages. These creatures are the thestrals that Luna has been able to see as long as she's been at Hogwarts.
In the wake of controversy in the wizarding over whether or not Harry's claim that Lord Voldemort--the worst dark wizard of their time--has returned, Luna speaks up for him proudly, as does her father in the Quibbler. Unfortunately, the words of Luna and her father often fall on deaf ears as she can regularly be heard repeating his odd theories.
Later in the year, when they find that their new Defense Against Dark Arts teacher isn't teaching them anything practical, Harry Potter and his friends start a club called Dumbledore's Army to teach other students who want to learn practical defense. Luna signs up learns many useful spells under Harry's tutelage.
At the end of the year, Harry called on the help of several friends, including Luna, in an effort to save his godfather from something he sees in a vision. Luna helps him to eventually sneak out of Hogwarts and suggests they take the thestrals to the Ministry of Magic, where he saw a vision of his godfather in trouble.
Once at the Ministry, they are ambushed by Death Eaters--followers of Voldemort--and Luna fights with her newfound friends, protecting Ron and Ginny in the process. She continues to fight until she's stunned.
After the fight, Harry has lost his godfather and Luna speaks to him about her mother's death in an attempt to offer comfort and support. She believes that she will see her mother again.
The next school year, Luna rides the train to school with the Harry and Neville, who had also fought with them, and laments the loss of their DA meetings. She says that the meetings were like having friends. When another student expresses negative sentiment at Harry for spending time with them, Luna tells him that people expect him to surround himself with cooler people and he tells her that he thinks they're cool, because they fought together.
During this year, she gets closer to many of the people she'd fought that battle with; comforting Hermione, being defended by Ginny and even going to a party as Harry's platonic date. Despite not having many friends before, she's far from shy. At the party, she speaks her mind, making friends with a vampire and accidentally angering Professor Snape, to Harry's delight.
Abilities/Special Powers:
Luna is in her fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardly and knows the spells, charms, hexes, potions and other magical skills that any studious fifth year student would know, in addition to the spells she has learned from Harry Potter and his friends during her time in the DA. It would be impossible to list everything she could possibly know, but a good list of what would be on the curriculum in the Harry Potter universe can be found here. She is shown to be particularly good at charms and with the knowledge that she eventually worked with magical creatures, she was very likely good with that, as well. She has an exceptional knowledge of magical theory and history, though it can sometimes get lost in her willingness to believe things that might not be true.
Luna is also seen to be very crafty. She has what seems to be a never-ending supply of one-of-a-kind earings, as well as several exceptionally impressive animal hats that she wears to support both her own house and Gryffindor at sports games.
Third-Person Sample: Luna had never found herself in a place such as this before and her first instinct is to explore. It's a curious-looking place, the design not quite what she's come to expect from wealthy wizarding families, but also not entirely far off the mark, either.
That isn't to say that she feels no concern over the change in her surroundings, but given some of the secrets she's discovered in her time at Hogwarts so far--not the least of which the Room of Requirement--she doesn't feel any need to let that overwhelm her curiosity. If this place is some extension of Hogwarts, she'll find her way back eventually. For now, she wants to see what it is.
It's a few minutes later, as she passes beautiful pillars and paintings and mirrors, that she comes across what seems to be an entrance and a small stack of pamphlets on a table.
Wonderland. Now, that's interesting.
She pulls her Spectre Specs out of her pocket and flips the pamphlet upside down just to make sure, but it reveals no new secrets.
First-Person Sample: [ Luna still has her large pink Spectre Specs glasses on her face as she addresses the network, looking somewhat unsure of the device. She'd read the pamphlet a few times over, but the device was surprisingly muggle-like for something found in what seems to be such a magical place, and she's not the most experienced with this sort of thing. ]
Hello. My name is Luna Lovegood. I think I might be displaced.
[ She knows where she is, of course, so she's not entirely lost. She's just not sure where Wonderland is. ]
I was at Hogwarts a few hours ago and I think I'd like to find my way back in time for my lessons tomorrow. I think I've already missed today's.
[ And then as if she's just remembered she's got the Specs on, she pushes them down her nose to eye the camera over the rim. ]
I get the distinct impression that there are blibbering humdingers floating around the mirrors here. Has anyone else noticed?
